Our school was founded by Yogi Matsyendranatha Maharaj. The Guruship was bestowed upon Yogi Matsyendranatha Maharaj by Yogi Shri Devnatha Maharaj and Shri Mithleshnatha Maharaj, two prominent gurus of the Natha tradition. Yogi Matsyendranatha was born in Russia (Bryansk), and in the end of the early '90s he began practicing yoga by himself. Eventually, like-minded people joined him to practice under his guidance. At that time qualified Yoga teachers, or even information on Yoga, were not readily available in Russia due to the censorship of such matters and suppression of any religious activity in the Soviet Union which were all-pervasive and strictly enforced. Therefore it was necessary to gather information about yoga individually; some Yoga practitioners went to well-known domestic teachers, others brought the literature about yoga from foreign countries. In the early 90s Yoga schools and centers in Russia did not follow or were connected to any authentic tradition; for this reason, we can say that they were experimental in nature. However, their aspiration and efforts in Yoga research should be valued and respected.
This situation brought Yogi Matsyendranatha to the decision to travel to India and other Southeast Asian countries to study various spiritual traditions. He visited many spiritual teachers, who are well-known in the West. Meeting with these teachers and his research in India, particularly of the Natha tradition, brought Yogi Matsyendranatha to a conclusion that it was necessary to re-think and re-consider many of the concepts about Yoga generally accepted in the West. It also indicated that his own views on Yoga were closely related to the Natha tradition. Probably, this fact made his swift acceptance by the tradition possible.
While in training with the Nathas, Yogi Matsyendranatha Maharaj accepted the initiation from Natha-yogi Shri Mithleshnatha Maharaj and through his rigorous he was able to realize mystical subtleties of the Natha doctrine. In 2004 Yogi Shri Mithleshnatha Maharaj bestowed the Guruship upon Yogi Matsyendranatha Maharaj with right to give initiations. He also instructed Yogi Matsyendranatha to receive the sanyasa (purna-diksha) from well-known Siddha Sadguru Yogi Shri Devnatha Maharaj. Guruji Yogi Shri Devnatha confirmed Yogi Shri Matsyendranatha’s attainments in yoga-sadhana and accepted him as a disciple and confirmed his guru title. He also transmitted many upadeshas for the practice of Yoga and gave his blessing to propagate the Natha tradition.
Subsequently Yogi Shri Devnatha Maharaj has received Shri Matsyendranatha’s disciples in his Ashram with great love and care and has given many unique advices in sadhana. Guru Shri Devnatha Maharaj is a luminous siddha with wide experience in Yoga practice - people who had the luck to meet him have no doubt about it. The Main Mahant of Gorakhnath mandir (Gorakhpur), Shri Avedyanatha, has blessed Yogi Matsyendranatha to propagate Shiva Gorakshanatha's doctrine and his disciples and followers to do Yoga sadhana.
Our tradition accepts all true religions and philosophies which help people find self-consciousness. However, the way of Yoga is beyond religion; it is the way of inner exploration, i.e. the exploration of the inner universe, which was developed and perfected through millenniums of research, study and practical application by enlightened masters. The masters of many interconnected traditions, who lived, taught and propagated their teaching in diverse places at various times. Our school neither idealizes nor refutes anything, since we avoid extremes; the Natha's ideology is so great and rich, that everyone can find personal benefit in it, irrespective of nationality, sex, religion, social status and etc. Everything that serves for the benefit of mankind is completely accepted by Natha's tradition; Yoga is also a science that gives an opportunity of high-grade self-research. Yoga as a way of knowledge of oneself and of the world has always existed, it is not limited in methods; Yoga is an aspiration for spiritual evolution, therefore practices of Nathas, were incorporated a lot of valuable doctrines such as Vedism, Shaiva-shaktism, Tantrism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sufism (Islam), Taoism, Christianity, and etc. Our doctrine sees benefit in any way of self-perfection based both on ancient psychophysical methods and on modern discoveries and achievements, even in scientific atheism.
Activity of Guru Shri Matsyendranatha Maharaj is supported by many well-known masters of yoga, modern scientists, artists, politicians and historians. Guru Shri Matsyendranatha and his disciples are engaged in promotion of traditional texts of Natha-sampradaya to make the great Siddha Gorakshanatha doctrine available to people. We are always glad to collaborate with other traditions and schools aimed at the spiritual evolution of the mankind.
